| I have made a couple posts over the last several months about the rattle or knocking noise that I was hearing from my engine. Finally paranoia got the better of me and I decided to perform the 120k maintenance kit to set my mind at ease. I am definitely glad I did. Here's the original post: [ http://twinturbo.net/nissan/300zx/forums/general/view/2352563/Video-of-tick--knock.html ] and the original video, [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gd7DHdlKLFM&sns=em ] While taking the front of the engine apart, I noticed the AC idler pulley had some play in the bearing and I seriously wondered if that alone was the whole problem. Because I had bought all the parts already, I continued on. When I had all the timing covers removed, I saw that the timing belt tensioner was in the fully compressed position and two slight rub marks on the inside of the two upper covers. It turns out the tensioner was completely seized shut.
